Halloween Safety

Everyone's favorite spooky holiday is coming up quick, and between the parties, late nights and trick-or-treating, every parent wants their child to be safe on Halloween. That's why holidays like Halloween Safety Month were created, so minds would be turned toward keeping everyone safe while they're having fun this spooky season.

While the direct origin of the month is not known, the movement toward Halloween safety began somewhere around the 1970s. The American Legion has record of implementing a nationwide Halloween safety program for young trick-or-treaters and has continued to urge its members to conduct Halloween programs designed to keep young children safe in an effort to reduce accidents associated with Halloween.

Try these tricks to keep the trick-or-treating more treat than trick this year:

  • Add reflective tape, fun lights or glowsticks to costumes if you plan on staying out past sunset.
  • Consider non-toxic makeup over masks (which can obscure vision), and test makeup on small areas of skin to see if it causes irritation. Don't forget to remove makeup before going to bed to protect skin and eyes.
  • Plan your route beforehand for any older kids going trick-or-treating with a group and decide on a time for everyone to be home. Make sure kids stick to familiar, well-lit areas.
  • Agree not to eat the treats until everyone gets home, especially for those with food allergies. Help make this happen by eating a meal before going trick-or-treating.
  • Talk to everyone about the importance of keeping the phones down and the eyes up, especially when crossing the street.
  • For those who will be driving, make sure to take extra care to watch for kids walking on roadways, medians and curbs. They most likely don't know all the rules, and costumes can often be dark colors that blend into the night. Enter and exit driveways carefully.
  • If you plan on being a trick-or-treated house, make sure your yard is visible and free of hazards like garden hoses, loose toys, etc.
  • Keep an open dialogue about safe and unsafe people, situations and hard topics with your kids. Role play situations like managing unwanted attention from a stranger.
  • Make sure everyone knows their names, important numbers and their home address in case of emergencies.
