Lufkin Creative is a newly developed nonprofit organization that cultivates and supports an authentic and collaborative thriving arts community deep in the heart of the Pineywoods.

Their goal is to encourage and facilitate artistic and cultural growth in Lufkin and Angelina County, as well as provide unique opportunities for artists and scholars from all mediums. Through collaboration and inclusiveness, they are using art and culture as a catalyst for economic growth, artistic expression and enhanced quality of life.

As a first-time Brookshire Brothers Charitable Foundation recipient, Lufkin Creative used their grant to purchase food and supplies for a new, free event called the Art of Food. The Art of Food workshop, led by nutritionist and certified diabetes educator Amy Wright, RDN, brought together a room full of school-age children and inspired them to create edible masterpieces. They also discussed basic nutrition, which is a major key to growing health-conscious kids. food prep

Angelina County has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the state, and studies have shown that involving children in meal preparation promotes better eating habits and health outcomes. The Art of Food presented an opportunity to engage families to learn about healthy food options together in a free and friendly environment.

From vibrant veggie sculptures to fruit art, the smiles and laughter were proof that learning about healthy food can be so much fun!
